Modular Type
This modular typeface was inspired by the intricate forms and mythical imagery of Renaissance mermaids. I designed the entire typeface using a structured grid system and only nine building blocks, challenging myself to create a complete and cohesive alphabet within strict visual constraints. I also created alternate J and j letterforms featuring mermaid figures, adding a playful connection between the typography and its inspiration. This project allowed me to explore modular typography, repetition, consistency, and how simple geometric forms can be combined to create expressive letterforms.
The Grid Structure
Each letterform was constructed using a structured grid system and only nine foundational building blocks. The main challenge was creating an entire typeface with such a limited visual vocabulary; I could only introduce a new building block if it could be used in at least three different letters. This constraint pushed me to think creatively about repetition, proportion, and how simple shapes could be combined to create distinct yet cohesive letterforms.
